[ it's only nth time he's said the name now, has said it so much in the last 18,623 seconds that it barely feels like a word anymore, but he keeps on because if he stops he's sure, he's dead fucking certain he'll go mad. ]
[ familiar, endearing almost. the boy's voice is the only thing that keeps Nanami from going off to la-la-land in his mind. that and the hand wrapped around his wrist are constant reminders that there are still people he mustn't abandon (again), that he can't be selfish and simply drift away.
his own voice is barely above a whisper, the blood loss and constant pain taking their toll. ]
( In the middle of one of Nanami's outside adventures comes rainbow dragon. There is no hesitancy in its approach, no fear when it slinks down to the jujutsu sorcerer. It drops a carefully held giftbag to the ground before the man, then whips itself back up into the sky. Inside is a few wrapped gifts - an mp3 player that Geto has absolutely added the worst music to ( and some more calming tunes, he still does worry, thank you ), an eye mask, a plushie because they're all idiots, a box of pastries, and a very strong whiskey. There's a note, but all that says is 'It looks like you :)' and nothing more. )
[ Come Christmas day, there are some gifts left for Nanami to find on his doorstep, wrapped up in yellow paper with black dots on it. The amount of effort Yuji put in to finding the paper is probably embarrassing to think about, but he managed it all the same.
Inside the box is a series of gifts:
🐯 A tie, similar to the one that Nanami used to wear, but more pastel - but definitely high quality, a little bit fancy. 🐯 What could be described as a giant jumper, but it's probably around the right size for Nanami to wear, in a dark green colour (avoiding his usual blue, just in case). 🐯 Some notebooks and pens, actual paper versions, that he bought a while ago and never managed to give to him. 🐯 A polaroid, of Yuji and Gojo together, giving a peace sign at the camera. 🐯 Pair of plushes, one a cat and one a tiger, where the cat is wearing cool green sunglasses.
There's also a note attached:
Nanamin,
I know you didn't want to come back. I know that you might have been happier if you'd never come here at all, and that you'd been allowed to stop. But I'm glad every single day that you came back, that I got to see you again and spend more time with you. I never got to tell you how important you were to me, or how happy I was that I was able to meet you and learn from you, so I'm going to tell you now before I run out of time.
Thank you, for teaching me, and being there for me, and supporting me. I know you're not a teacher, but you don't need to be.
[ Delivery via courier, but not on Wednesday. Just sometime. Inside the bag is a bottle of sake with a card with the date for the meeting he requested Silco to arrange.
[ exactly one week after the Outsiders have returned from the Underworld, a message pops up from a curseman who has spent that time comatose. until now. ]
[ The reply is a simple 'leave the ring'. Nanami leaves his own on the bed of his assigned room. His ocular is set to only receive emergency messages from LILITH. His turn to take a break from it all.
Midnight sees these two vanishing from the base through a portal. Las Vegas is welcoming to anyone with enough money, and if a birthday after death isn't a reason to splurge, then what is? ]
[ Late in the day on July 3, a package is left at Nanami's door. There's no note on the outside of it, but once the package's contents are examined, it will give away just who exactly has gone through the effort (as if it wasn't already obvious). The wrapping paper itself is a soft pastel yellow, and inside is a box. Inside the box? A series of gifts:
🐯 One very expensive bottle of Daiginjo sake, helpfully purchased on his behalf by Silco, who has a high enough opinion of Nanami to get the good stuff. 🐯 A pair of sake cups, just in case he wants to drink it with someone. 🐯 Some luxury chocolates (not the handmade stuff that Yuji attempted in the past). 🐯 A recipe book, boasting different recipes of breads from around the world, for beginners and professionals. 🐯 Vouchers for paid mini breaks - paid for dinner, time at the VR studio, some random things like cinemas and anywhere else he thought Nanami would like to do. 🐯 A range of nice teas and coffees, alongside a handsome thermos and a teacup set. Just in case.
At the bottom, there's a little note on a piece of paper, in Yuji's handwriting: "There's a cake in the fridge in the cafeteria when you're back." Should Nanami go and find the cake, he'll find a little thing in a box, with some wonky icing and decoration, with "Happy Birthday Nanami" written on the top in shaky letters. It's clearly home made. ]
[ When Choso finally tells him that there has been some kind of quarrel between the brothers, Nanami sends him back to Neo Tokyo so the kids can make up. The boys shouldn't fight and hold grudges - when push comes to shove they only have each other.
He returns later that day, dropping off the few things Choso has left behind in his hurry in the boys' room (no sign of either of the brothers), and slowly makes his way back to his own room. The presents are unexpected, have him stand before his closed door, staring at the gifts as if he's never seen anything like it before. Finally, with a soft sigh, he picks them up and takes them inside.
Itadori's gift is thoughtful as always. It makes him feel bad that the boy would go through so much trouble for a day Nanami doesn't ascribe any deeper meaning to. And to have a cake. Standing in the kitchen, the frozen cake seems to stare back at him accusingly - and who gave that cake the right to be so judgemental?
(How is he even supposed to eat that?)
The cake ends up back in his room, sitting on the small desk next to the presents, while the ex-salaryman washes off the traces of Vegas. Perhaps he'll take the cake with him to the old man's shop and share it with him later. The geezer has a sweet tooth that could rival Gojo's. Or perhaps he'll gather his friends from home and have the cake with them. Ah, what to do...
(What Nanami will do is sit on the floor of his room in the dead of night and eat the cake with his hands until there's nothing left.)
Somewhere in there he remembers his manners and sends Itadori a message, saying thank you and how thoughtful all the presents are and that he really appreciates them. Sometime later another message: an image of the empty plate the cake sat on and that it was a very delicious cake. ]
( Left at his door is a small giftbag, inside there's a very homemade cd, the likes of which Nanami will remember from their youth. There's a tracklist, in Geto's easy scrawl, and he's even added little black star stickers to it. Alongside it is a bottle of the most potent liquor he could find, and a K100 giftcard to a bakery that does different kinds of desserts. The card is a plain one, but there's a note in it -
Happy Birthday, I did a little digging and while the songs aren't ones you'll remember they match the vibe of the music you used to listen to, so hopefully they're fun. Have a night off, make poor choices.
[ The presents are unexpected, have him stand before his closed door, staring at the gifts as if he's never seen anything like it before. Finally, with a soft sigh, he picks them up and takes them inside.
Snacks, liquor, and an almost unhealthy dose of sentimentalism. The protégé and the senpai seem to have shared braincells.
Nanami plops in the tracklist into his ocular and has it track all the songs down for him, listening to them while he eats his birthday cake sitting on the floor in the dead of night. ]
